Should Plant Nurseries Offer a Warranty on Plants?

The future of garden retail will be the tale of two different ways of doing business.  On one side are the big box stores and their suppliers, and on the other side, the independent nursery and their suppliers.  One side represents big business, throw away culture, and little to no corporate or personal responsibility.  The other side represents small business, re-use and recycle, as well as personal and corporate responsibility.   

We do not offer a blanket warranty (for free), as we feel there would be a lot of abuse if we offered that type of guarantee.  Subsequently, we feel it’s best if customers have some skin in the game.  We prefer to give customers discounts (big discounts), saving them money up front and subsequently not having a warranty.  We let customers know from the beginning the plants have been marked up and they can be purchased with a warranty (full price) or without a warranty (at 50% off).

 We tend to gravitate towards the second option as customers tend to try harder when they know they will have to pay something for a replacement.  Basically, we strive to do our job by selecting the right plants for their garden and then it is up to the customer to do their job in caring for them, plus the upfront savings more than makes up for the money spent on a one-year warranty.  Face it, nothing is free in life these days.

First and foremost, it’s our feeling that anyone who elects to plant or have a living plant added to their property should take responsibility in ensuring the continued care of that plant.  We are fully aware though that sometimes life happens- plants die, people get sick, etc., but it’s how you deal with it, not who you can blame for it that makes the difference.  With that being said, we will still work with customers on a case-by-case basis (usually under extenuating circumstances).

2025 Warranty Options:

All remaining reverse warranties from 2024 will continue to be upheld as per the original agreement until time nullifies them.  Plus, we now offer these new policy introductions.

(Option 1) Full Price Warranty:

Understand, you’ve paid full price on the plant to receive this (1) year warranty. The following warranty is provided to the original purchaser with the presentation of the receipt, provided full payment has been made.  This warranty is void on material that fails to grow due to neglect or the acts of nature.

Only one (1) replacement of the plant material will be made under this warranty.  No cash refunds are allowed.  No labor is charged on re-planting of items (if Landmark originally planted the item) and its within 25 miles of Landmark. 

Distances over 25 miles will receive a charge based on mileage, which can be determined prior to planting via an estimate if you desire.  This warranty covers the plant for One (1) year from time of purchase:  On trees, shrubs, perennials, fruits, vines, ground covers, and ornamental grasses, excluding those listed below.

Excluded items receiving a sixty (60) day warranty: Azaleas (including Rhododendrons), Butterfly bush, Daphne, holly, Japanese Maple, Tricolor Beech, Specified Evergreens, and Specified Roses.  Additional items may be added to this list, ask sales associates at the time of purchase if you have a question on an items warranty, they should all be marked. 

No returns or warranty on: Annuals, topicals, houseplants, herbs, vegetables, bulbs, sod, transplanted plant materials, and/or pond plants.

Please Note: Plants purchased at 50% off or more or are planted in above ground containers or left above ground through the winter months will not qualify for warranty.

(Option 2)  50% Off - No Warranty:

We will be offering wholesale pricing to customers at 50% off with no warranty in 2025.  You can take 50% off the marked price and plant it yourself or have us professionally plant it.  If for some reason the item doesn’t make it, you have the option to come in and but another one for 50% off or pick a different item all together at 50% off and pay to have it planted Distances over 25 miles will receive a charge based on mileage, which can be determined prior to planting via an estimate if you desire.

Since we do a vast percentage of our business under discounted pricing, we simply don’t have the ability to do free wellness checks on individual plants.  Our location being out of town doesn’t allow this to be cost effective either.  However, at any time you can email pictures to Sales@landmarklandscapes.us for ongoing plant advice for free.  Keep in mind if you’re not happy with the plant at any time during the first year, you can request that we come out and replace the item.  Charges will be estimated prior to replacement contingent on which warranty option (1 or 2) you went with

Please Note: Landscape projects booked through Landmark will allow customers the option of purchasing a (1) time wellness check per year.  Talk to your designer or a sales associate regarding pricing.

Timing on Replacements

Replacements can begin around May, by this date most of the plants have arrived and are becoming available at Landmark.  Keep in mind, we custom grow certain varieties and it takes time for them to get them ready. 

Replacements will be scheduled on a first come first serve basis.  Please understand that we have hundreds of customers.  We can’t just drop everything and focus on only doing replacements and continue to make a profit.  Be patient, we will get to you in the timeliest manner possible.
